Response to Editorial #6

While I agree with the Daily Mirror that Roosevelt took too long to support his allies, I must say that FDR is a true friend. Even before our first face-to-face encounter, Franklin found a way around the U.S. Neutrality Act and sent fifty destroyers to my aid. His message to me at the time was most moving, a quotation from the Book of Ruth, "Thy people shall be my people and thy God, my God, even to the end." Meeting him was like opening your first bottle of champagne. Since our first encounter in America, we have become great friends. He has offered me shelter and countenance on many occasions and has nursed me back to health at least twice. That is not to say that we are in agreement all of the time. In fact, we have had many disagreements over the chapters of the Atlantic Charter and the Invasion of Normandy. When it counts most, however, I can count on FDR to support me. He backed my decision to help Stalin take a stand against Hitler's invasion, something I didn't receive from my own colleagues. He has put his confidence in me multiple times. He has given me his faith and his blessing, and under God's will, we will persevere. We shall not fail or falter; we shall not weaken or tire. Neither the sudden shock of battle, nor the long-drawn trials of vigilance and exertion will wear us down. Give us the tools and we will finish the job.

FDR's ever faithful friend,

Winston Churchill
