Response to Editorial #4

When France fell, I knew that Britain was alone, especially when Hitler told his people, "...that a landing in England is possible provided air superiority can be obtained." I don't believe that Hitler truly wanted to conquer Britain, but I think that his whole campaign was designed to discredit and defeat me. If he had truly wanted to go to war with Britain, he would have built a navy up to par with ours; this never occurred. Obviously Hitler never expected our air force to be able to withstand the fierce attack of the Luftwaffe bombers and fighters. I will never forget that Sunday afternoon when I had the privilege of joining the Royal Air Force at Uxbridge when the Nazis turned tail and ran. I should have known that Hitler would turn on London. The blitz destroyed our industrial East End and the docks, and I wept to see the undying devotion of the workers towards me and our cause during my visit of the destruction. From the safety of my underground office, I often used the words of Queen Victoria to give me strength, "Please understand there is no pessimism in this house, and we are not interested in the possibilities of defeat; they do not exist." It is the people of Britain who deserve the credit for Hitler's defeat, without their strength and perseverance the battle would not have been won.

The battle rages on, V for victory,
Winston Churchill
