FDR Fireside Chat: Response to Editorials 1 and 2

There is no need to remind you, my fellow Americans, that our country has enough problems of her own. As we work to rebuild our country from a devastating depression, we must be careful of "foreign entanglements" - good advice from President Washington. That said, we can only look at the world and see storm clouds gathering:

1.     Japan has attacked our ally, China. The atrocities we hear of in Nanking are troubling.
2.     Italy has slaughtered thousands of innocent Ethiopians... and need I remind you that the leader of Italy, Benito Mussolini, is a political ally of Adolph Hitler.
3.     And what about Hitler. He claims Czechoslovakia is German and belongs to Germany. And he threatens to back it up with force.

My Cousin Teddy was famous for saying, "Walk softly and carry a big stick."

My fellow Americans, it is time for the stick. The Daily Mirror hints at "atrocities" in China. I have before me, intelligence reports that say between 20,000 to 80,000 women have been raped by Japanese soldiers in the city of Nanking. These same reports say that the Japanese army is systematically - SYSTEMATICALLY - executing Chinese citizens. Estimates run as high as 300,000 people.

America cannot ally itself with a country that commits atrocities on innocent civilians, and then calls it "war." I am submitting a plan to Congress that will allow our country to arm our Chinese allies. I have contacted Premier Chiang Kai-Shek to open negotiations.
So what do we do? We become the "Arsenal of Democracy". We send weapons and assistance to China and any other of our friends who are brutally attacked. But at the same time, we must respect the spirit of The Neutrality Act. Americans WANT to remain neutral. Ambassador Bullitt, my close friend, was 100% wrong to tell the French that we would fight with them if Hitler invaded. The U.S. will not join a “stop-Hitler bloc” under any circumstances, and in the event of German aggression against Czechoslovakia, the U.S. will remain neutral.

Sincerely,

Franklin Delano Roosevelt

I believe that Hitler is one to not be concerned about. After the Great War, Germany is weak and feeble. But now the ALGO-German Treaty has somehow made this remarkable comeback by building up their military. But I don’t think this is something to get up in and worried about because of how weak Germany is right now. Hitler is a leader that is only threatening people by words and not actions. Peace will be restored.  How could this person start a chain reaction by one person? Just one person got all of these people to follow him and do whatever he says. He is brainwashing these people. But will it really be enough. This is something that is not to be worried about. I think that people are getting way over their heads. Too scared to face a person like this after the Great War. The issue that we should be focused on is communism not this nonsense in Germany.

Your cowardness is false??!?! Really because it’s about the size of a planet!??!?!!? Any ordinary person who is not hypnotized by your "power" can see this; even my cat can see that!! I think you are mistaken by your courage, it’s really fear!! To iron our flaws?!?!?! What are flaws to you? Everybody has flaws even someone with as big of an ego as you. I can name plenty of my flaws and yours! We all have them it’s like voices, we all have one!! People choose to be cold, dark and concealed, you are one of them, I sure that everyone in this world has done at least one good deep and that made their heart healthier. How dare you think you are doing something good you have no sense of direction, if you are looking for Heaven you are going the wrong way.

Just because I was born in Germany doesn’t mean that I want to be apart of Germany and also I live in Amsterdam not Germany! I can pass for a 10 year old, and my age is none of this conversation so we are done on that topic.  Do you ever wonder why you are never seen with him in public? And wonder why he is away so often? And how do you know that you will shoot yourself? You poor thing, the world doesn’t revolve around you and your life. Mother would say, "je bent een verward kind vast te zitten in je eigen wereld."  You are a confused child stuck in your own world.

RESPONCE TO EDITORIAL #2

In the Great war Germany helped enomosly... did they not? Though they fought against us, I understand that they feel abandond from the rest of the world. Being the little baby in the family isn't easy. Japan wants to show power and that they can be strong. So to all I highly sugest not taking their power for granit. They could do much damage. I admire that they have enormous nationallity. There soilders would willingly give there lives if it was for the good of there country. They showed there power through the tormant of China which should not be egnored. Japan wants to be noticed and I highly sugest that the Leauge of nations notices that before thing get too drastic.

Editorial #2 - Japan Must be Condemned! August 30, 1939

In the resolution of The Great War in 1918-19, Japan had a role in the League of Nations as a more of a crutch to other major players - it was more of a supporting role.  It felt, as many nations felt after The Great War, that it had not received enough of a reward from being on the side of the victors.  .

Since this, Japan has aggressively re-vamped her policy on military and imperialism.  Their economy was down and their people looking for direction.  It seems that this small country has the sincere desire to sit at the “Big Dog” table with other major powers.

It is at this point that Japan’s most recent actions in the last 10 years must be examined.  In 1931, Japan kicked away her ties to the League of Nation’s by doing nothing less than launching an aggressive invasion of Manchuria, a province of China.  The now legendary “Rape of Nanking” suggests unspeakable horrors.  Mass execution of men, women, and children are among the rumors.

This invasion, obviously, did not have the approval of the League of Nations, but no action was taken.  Now, Japan is invading China and committing atrocities to soldiers and citizens alike that are unmentionable in a public newspaper.  The horrors that occurred in the Rape of Nanking are unspeakable.  Yet, people aligned with Japan sing her praises for now being among the new round-table of dictators and military-driven heads of state.

What does Japan say about this?  They are trying to build a “Sphere of Influence” to keep Asia for Asians.  They want to be the head of this.  So, they are exercising imperialism aggressively.

I tell you, global citizens, this is no way to show your worldly strength when you’re butchering hundreds of thousands of citizens.  This is murder!

I ask you, my loyal readers, is Japan proving to be a hero or a villain in our world today?

Here are pictures flooding in from media outlets around the globe:

Through out the criticizems I see no facts and logic put into them which proves your theory of the uneducated crticizems to be presice. They lack the knowledge of being a TRUE leader. I look forward to compromising with you in the future.

As for you husband, I hear he has minipulated his own country into pasing his laws by flooding the consil. Josef Mengele-To Hitler

Dear Hitler,
I was looking into genetics and I was thinking that I could create the greatest race known to man kind, that could help Germany create the perfect world. With your great leadership and my expertise in genetics we together could create the perfect living space. With other countries help we can make this world truly perfect. You can help me decide what race would be perfect for our offspring, as they inherit the land we live and breath on. Also with all the criticism you get from random uneducated people, you don't need to listen to them I mean look at them they aren't any where close to as superior as you. Just so you know I support you and I believe that you can do what no man has or will ever do. I look forward to hearing from you.

RESPONCE TO IRA HAYES

"A HORIBLE MAN!!!!!",
My people love and adore me with ample amont of devotion. I love and adore them right back. We are Germans who should both be feared and adored by outsiders. We have created a thriving country from the despair the Leauge of Nations so put upon us. YOU MAN OF LITTLE KNOWLEDGE!!!! You and all others would be more than privledged to be apart of the German people. My life is focused on staying strong for my people and giving them what they deserve which is not a poor unprovidable country. We have grown from self disipline and have shown more matureity than the drunk and cocky nation of yours. I do what is right for my people. Anything less would be unthinkable. I took back our land to show we will not let the defeat of the Great War bring us to our knees begging for the pathetic scraps you would have been willing to give. Germany is returning its powerful economy and if having a strong society is wrong speak now.
-A. Hitler

Response to Hilter

Dear Hitler,
Thank you for letting us know about the economy (not) we already know. Also instead of worrying about what others are doing, worry about your own actions and how they are going to be leading your country in the right path. "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." <--- remember this you might need it for times in the future, since right now in the present you aren't doing to well.

response to editorial Mitsou Fuchida

While you guys are relaxing.  I am fighting for my country[Japan].  It is between the mighty empire of Japan and the small Chinese.  Those Germans are helping china fight us.  I have worked very hard on the bombing the Chinese.   I have shot down over twenty five airplanes.  Hitler sounds like a very strong and friendly man.  Other than Hitler helping out the Chinese.  The Chinese are like bees hat keeping flying around you.  It is so annoying.  If I had a way to stop those Chinese I would.  Like a big bomb that can destroy anything in its path.  My friend Hideki Tojo has promoted me now to a captain I am so glad that he did.  I am also training pilots.  I can see a lot of potential in these young pilots.  Right know I am teaching them how to fly a really big bomber.

To Frank

"Why would I be upset about not being a part of Germany?!?!?!???!!!??" Your words exactly Frank! Funny because you were born in Germany. Also your birthday is the 12th of June and the Daily Mirror posted in April so I suggest you the simple math, you are 9!

2nd response to Anne

I find myself rereading your post over and over again, though I can't imagine why, but I must have noticed your snide comment about Hitler being a horrible leader. Well you are wrong. He is loved by his people, every time he gets up to speak he is cheered for! I think you would love to praised like that. I know I would, but I am never seen with him in public! Your accusations of me being with him all the time are wrong. He is always whisked away doing something important and barely ever sees me. I don't get enough attention, so much so that I shot myself, sadly, a wrong mistake but you don't understand me, so see to it that you stop criticizing me and as I said before mind your own business.

To Anne

Anne,
You must also stay strong and not give in to him. He is a horrible person capable of doing horrible things. His hatred towards your people could end in holocaust or prison. My thoughts go out to you and your friends, for you are so young going through this horrible time. Stay strong my young one and stay true to who you are and what you believe.
                                         -Ira

Hitler

Dear Hitler,
You sound like a horrible man. The past may repeat itself; it may even repeat itself worse than before. We must study our past to learn from it and to make sure we don’t make mistakes again. You’d be surprised of how hard of a target the world is. I am putting my life at stake in the Marines, so you don’t take over my beloved homeland. One thing I know is that you cannot be trusted. You kill all who are against you, young, women, and babies. You spare no one and in your wake lay mass graves. They weren’t even given a proper funeral. They were shot and fell into mass graves. And though our economy isn’t high, we can still fight a war thanks to our wonderful president Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

to: Eva Bruan

Dear Eva

If you knew what you needed to know, you would be taking action and stopping your Mr. Handsome.

Why would I be upset about not being a part of Germany?!?!?!???!!!?? Germany is; false, underdeveloped, and incorrect, hypnotized, and has a huge ego! You need spectacles! There is defiantly something going on. The saddest part is I, (a ten year old child) know more about what’s going with Hitler and his mess than you, and you have a direct connection to him!!!! Something’s missing in this picture. All you think about is how pretty you are and your love life. Good I'm glad you like being you, so do I! And I'm sure you know nothing about political information! Your do full of it, Eva! "So you are taking it out on young, innocent girls like me!" really? And I'm not 5!! I'm 1o!! And good for you that you got average grades... I am talking about you being politically not smart, and not being able to figure out what Hitler is doing!! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO MIND MY OWN BUSINESS IF MY FUTURE IS AT RISK HERE, COWARD? I AM PROUD TO BE A JEW!!

-Anne Frank

To Anne Frank

My fellow German,

Those are strong words coming from a young girls mouth. Though others may be offended, I do not see a reason to get drastic. Whatever cowardness you see in me is false. I have the courage of a thousand soldiers as long as my country is safe and well. You say that everyone is good hearted. I highly doubt you have looked at the lives of every one person in a million  and seen only good. Us humans have rinkles and the job of the Nazi's is to iorn out those flaws until we are best as posible. Us humans are the dominate race and with such a role we must show we are not week. Thank you for your well being. I don't freat much on the fact that you loath me, but hope you use more logic when you criticize others.

Josef Mengele-#1

I Josef Mengele will be going to war as a medic this time will change my life for the better or for the worse . During this time I will be serving on the 5th SS Panzergrenadier Division Wiking on the Eastern Front. In 1942 they are thinking of sending me to the Soviet Front, from all I've heard it's the worse place possible for someone to go to. Also ever since I earned my doctorates in anthropology I have become very interested in twins and genetics and how everything works. If I can discover the secrets of genetics I can make this world a perfect one. Maybe if I get the chance I can go further into my interest, maybe by running some test or preforming experiments on some twins or pregnant mothers. If I do not make it through this hell-like war it could change all of humanity and could change history forever.

                                                                                                 - Josef Mengele

Response To Anne Frank

I'm sorry I don't meet to your status quo, I just know what I need to know. Judging is not kind. You are just upset that you aren't part of what Germany is part of so you are taking it out young innocent girls like me. Though you think I know nothing but why should I be so open to learning when I have Hitler by my side, he knows everything and will tell me anything I need to know! By the way Anne I am fine being myself, beautiful young, innocent and old to understand what I need to but you aren't because you are like 5 or something like that! You can call me stupid but I got average grades and didn't have to be that annoying little girl at the front of the class that seems to think she knows everything! So please mind your own business Jew!

Response to Edtorial #1-- Winston Churchill

I don't believe that Hitler can be trusted. The Anglo-German Treaty, a naval agreement which has allowed Germany the ability to reconstruct its navy, has undermined The League of Nations' ability to hold Germany accountable for its behavior in The Great War. Prime Minister Baldwin has been sweet talked by Chancellor Hitler. It is well known that Germany is notorious for breaking its treaties. This agreement also undermines the decision of Britain, France, and Italy, made at the Stresa conference to prevent the ability of Germany to take up arms. Germany's rearmament allowed them to reclaim the Rhineland, and I have no doubt that more countries will fall at Hitler's hand.  Although the choices he continues to make are in direct violation of the rules set in place after The Great War, I have to admit that I admire his courage, perseverance, and ability to challenge, defy, and overcome all of the people and regulations standing in his way. While it is too early to tell whether Hitler will restore honor and peace to Germany, I fear that these early actions in his reign are signs that he will lead all of us into another war. I pray that I am wrong.

Yours Honorably,

Winston Churchill

Dear Hitler,
How are we supposed to plan for the future is we can't, "...and worry ourselves of the future." ? and I thank you for telling me the obvious, yes our economies are low, thank you for that insight!Yes we must control,(which we are doing a much better job than you) our county or YOU (the "bigger" country) will take over. Response to Ira Hayes and Maggie Nightingale

Ira-

The League of Nations is like the three blind mice, Father used to tell me that sorry when I was a small child. After the Great War, I am astonished that Germany wants another war. I wish you luck in the marines!

Maggie- you seem like a lovely person! I urge you to become a nurse! Imagine saving hundreds of lives! What an honor! You can also meet handsome men as well! Good luck!

-Anne Frank

Responce to Ira

My dear Ira,

This kind of behavior is precisely the kind of point I was talking about when I said the world is too easy of a target. You focus too much on the future and think to major extremes. A war after the blood bath that not long ago accrued… that’s preposterous. We must focus on the present. Not dwell on the past and worry ourselves of the future. Our economies are not high. Like Germany I advise you to put your mind to helping your economy. You must gain control of your country else some bigger country easily will. Germany is succeeding outstandingly. All else is a coward.

-          Adolf  Hitler

Maggie Nightingale

Even though Germany was blamed for the World War One, what made them think that they want to start another war? Was their "Great Depression" bad enough for them? Apparently not.  I remember hearing stories from the nurses, soldiers, and everyone in between, of World War One, from both sides of the war.  The stories sounded so bad.  This one story stuck with me, it was about the nurses, and what they had to do to help save some of the wounded soldiers.  The First World War was bad enough, so what, made Germany think thatthey want to try to rise up again?  Wasn’t World War One the war that ends all wars?  I have always wanted to be a nurse since I was like five, but as I was getting older I was trying to talk myself out of pursuing my dream and not becoming a nurse because of the horrific stories.  But I am still a kid, I have time to think.
-Maggie Nightingale

Response to Erwin Rommel

Erwin,
I totally disagree with you. If, God forbid, Hitler gains to much power we could be catapulted into another World War. Goodness knows what horrible things could lie ahead.
                                          -Ira

Response to Anne Frank

Anne,
I think the League of nations is to powerless to stop Germany. They are like blind mice. I also think that they are to scared to do anything. They know they that if they try to actually do something another war will start. The league of nations is powerless and just a fictional idea in my mind. They don't do much about anything. I think the whole thing is just a fail. You are very smart to realize that something isn't right. In fact it's the complete opposite of right, its horribly wrong.
                                        -Ira

response to Eva Braun

Dear Eva,
Maybe you should enhance your knowledge in politics because even an amateur would know that a governmental leader would not demolish all other political groups, that should be the first sign that something just isn't right. You spend the most time with him so you should be able to pick up on small hints that he is a cruel leader, or you are just as bright as some of my less-smart pupils. And, "I think you are all just JEALOUS." if I were jealous I would not be, 1. Writing this letter, and 2. I would be cheering for Hitler and be as blind as you, Eva. You are like an irritating joke that Maurice Coster, (one of my many admirers) would say. Mother and Father have cautioned me on this subject, from the tone of their voices when they warn Margo and I to be careful and look for Nazis when we are walking to and from school I can tell that they know more than me and are fretful with our future.
-Anne Frank

Response to Ira Hayes

I agree with you Ira! Are the league of nations afraid of Hitler, or are they just too blind to see that this is a bad idea, I mean really? I'm a ten year old girl and even I can see that this is not... right.
-Anne Frank

Response to Editorial #1

I happen to disagree with you. You say the Furher has taken the independence of Czechoslovakia and Austria, when in actuality he was freeing them from the wretched grip of the League of Nations. They greeted him as a Messiah of sorts, who had come to free all the German speaking people of the world and unite them, make them strong again. We are simply taking back what was ours before the humiliation of the Great War. Under the Furher our economy has soared to its previous heights and he has united us as one. You should both admire and be frightened by us, the superior race. While I don't know what he plans to do after reuniting the old Germany I am sure it is for the good health and welfare of all German people. While you may call his theories of racial purity racist and discriminate he has several valid points about mixing races. He doesn't say that he is perfect, in fact he admitted the flaws in some of his theories. What remains however, is that he brought Germany back from economic collapse and completely rejuvenated the German people.

                                                   Heil Hitler!

To Author of Post

Yes germany deceased from the Great War, but that was in the past. Thanks to me Germany has an outbursting economy. We have regaind our pride through the Nazi organazation. Throughout Germany you see German pride flood the faces of our beloved people. We train through self disipline knowing so much will come out of it. With our pride comes self control wich ceaces us from bragging to the rest of the world. This the reason of our silence. We are a strong and mighty nation that must not be taken advantage of. This making us differ from the rest of this world, which is too scared to even mention the word war. This makes them week and unprepared, which is a recipie for the perfect target. Never the less our contry means so much to me. I sympithize for our people being so brutally treaten. As you caught me say in the Daily Mirror I don't think much good will come out of mixing races. We have tried in the past and all that brought was down fall. Though I said this, I wouldn't think much of harming other races. I am Germany's ruler... not theirs. Until we speak again.
- Adolf Hitler

Eva Braun #1

I don't get the what big deal is with Hitler. He is just trying to rebound our beloved country that was brutally taken from us. Why would my Hitler want to go to war I mean he is a veteran right? Any ways I'm not to god with this  politics stuff all I know is that Hitler is loved and adored by his country and he wants to make peace and build up our economy. Hitler is a kind and passionate person that millions of people respect, I think you are all just JEALOUS. Well he is fine and you should all mind your own business and keep trying to clean up your own countries problems after the Great War before judging us because obviously Hitler has this handled! Besides I'm sure I don't know anything I'm just helping him and I will always be there for him whenever he needs me. I find it very handsome when he talks and makes everyone feel a lot better about their own country. So nothing is going on.

Editorial #1- Ira Hayes

Wow. Who would've thought that Germany could become so powerful. I thought they had been blamed for WWI. Weren't they in a great depression or something??? And why are they taking over small countries like Czechoslovakia and not Europe or Russia? I think they're trying to regain the land they had taken from them after WWI, but what do I know? I'm just a Pima Indian in the marines. But the thing that gets me the most about Germany taking over these small nations is that, the league of nations, isn't do anything!! What do they think, that Germany is too scared of war? I mean they're taking over Austria and Czechoslovakia, obviously they're not afraid of war!!!! Pay attention! I'm joining the Marines in case something bad happens. At least I'll be able to protect my homeland, even though F.D.R made a wise choice to stay neutral. But you can't guarantee U.S.A. will stay neutral ( see WWI). Well anyways, i should keep my mouth shut. Until next time.

I personally don't think that he is to trust, after all, powerful dictators can lie, and do horrible things. Mother taught Margo and I that lying is not good at an early age, Mother says that those lies only get bigger and bigger, like a snow ball, the more you roll it the bigger it gets. what if Hitler is a nasty man, and he lies to his people, what if he does cruel things to us? Mother and Father talk in hushed voices and tell me not to worry, but I'm 10!! I hope you are right The Daily Mirror.

Editorial #1 – August 26th 1939 – Disturbances in Europe

It has been almost a year since Germany decided to take the remainder of Czechoslovakia in 1938.  This raised a complete temper-tantrum from the League of Nations who chose to give in to German demands.  The Great War of 1914 left the world as we know in ruin and countries still refuse to work together.  Nothing has changed other than the cratered remains of our battlefields.   Europe is one giant alliance afraid to go to war – and yet, this alliance does not include two countries;  Germany and Russia.

Currently, news of Germany’s recent behavior under their younger, fearless, and passionate dictator has left Europe with many questions.

The outcome of The Great War was supposed to leave Germany humble rather than powerful.  What happened?  Why are other nations bowing down to Germany’s demands when it was Germany left devastated after our Great War?  Why do we hear nothing except silence from Germany these days?  The German people seem to have been nothing but silent within the past several weeks.  All is quiet.
Our loyal readers, the question is this - Is their chancellor, Adolf Hitler someone to be feared or admired?  While he has taken the independence of Czechoslovakia, he has created a passionate German people and a renewed and powerful economy under the Nazi Socialist Party.  Time will tell whether he is a hero or villain.  Our League of Nations needs to adopt a stricter policy in dealing with Germany since Germany should be feeble and weak after our Great War.
I do not approve of Hitler and Germany’s behavior, but I believe that being fearful of Hitler’s intentions is just hasty and foolish.  Our culture is afraid of war after “The Great War”.  No one will risk it – not even Germany.  Any real fear of Germany, or any nation for that matter seems like trying to create a solid argument from pure wind.   The Daily Mirror understands that Europe’s status quo will resume.  Society should not judge passionate dictator just because he is active and aggressive in charging up the attitudes and passions of his own people.

Many people have accused Adolf Hitler of feeling that other races such as Jews or non-Protestant religions are inferior to the German race.  I, for one, believe these to be little more than wild accusations since Chancellor Hitler was quoted as saying the following:

"In saying this, I promise you I am quite free of all racial hatred. It is, in any case, undesirable that one race should mix with other races. Except for a few gratuitous successes, which I
am prepared to admit, systematic cross-breeding has never produced good results. Its desire to remain racially pure is a proof of the vitality and good health of a race."  -Adolf Hitler

So, it would appear that there is little to be concerned about when it comes to the Nazi Socialist Party apart from a lot of heated rumors stemming from a strong German nation.
The Bottom Line _ Adolf Hitler and Germany are just another nation with big promises and no follow-through – a lot of Hooplah!
